As promised in my June 30 blog, I thought I would post again on the Lizard since the Amazing Spider-Man movie comes out today and features this villain. The Lizard is actually Dr. Curt Connors, a scientist who kept having mishaps with various chemical concoctions that turned him into a giant lizard! In these issues, after he is transformed, he tries to develop more of the chemical and pour it into a swamp so that he can create a lizard army and take over the world....sounds reasonable enough!
By the time these magazines came out, it was January 1967...the Vietnam conflict was in full swing. Flash Thompson, one of Spider-Man's highschool classmates who has been taunting him for being a nerd since issue #1, is drafted in issue 44. Mary Jane (Peter's future bride) has just recently shown up. Gwen Stacy is a fixture in the series, and John Romita and Stan Lee are in their stride.
The Marvel team waited for 38 issues to bring the Lizard back...part of this was probably because they had such success with the Green Goblin starting in issue 14, and also introduced a slew of other characters.
Anyway...enjoy the movie if you go see it today!
Until next time...
